Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III said that he has not withdrawn support from a bill to ease federal gun-control laws, although he refused to testify before a House committee considering the legislation. “There has been no hesitation from the Department of Justice about testifying,” said Meese, who has come under fire from police groups for his support of the measure, which would make it easier to buy, sell and transport firearms. Meese said that he told the House panel that he would not appear because the Treasury Department was taking the lead in the issue.
