Poway Finishes Regular Season as Top Team in San Diego County
SAN DIEGO — Poway High School, winner of two straight San Diego Section 3-A boys’ basketball championships, finished as the No. 1 team in The Times’ final San Diego County Top 10.
The Titans (21-3) open defense of their county championship tonight against Montgomery. El Camino, which was the top-ranked 2-A team in the county last season before losing in the section semifinals, finished No. 2 in the rankings. The Wildcats (22-3) open the 2-A playoffs tonight against Mar Vista.
In the only significant change, Morse (16-6)--ranked No. 2 last week--fell to No. 6 after a pair of losses to No. 4-ranked Serra.
The Tigers play No. 9 El Capitan in the first round of the 3-A playoffs Wednesday night. No. 8 Mount Carmel (17-7) takes on No. 4 Serra (21-3) tonight in the other first-round game matching ranked teams.
Defending San Diego Section 2-A champion Oceanside (19-4) finished No. 7 and will open the playoffs Wednesday night against City Western League champion La Jolla.
