Part of Right Booster Recovered

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A four-man submarine has recovered a small part of shattered space shuttle Challenger’s right rocket booster and has photographed several larger chunks on the ocean floor, a recovery official reported today.
The right rocket is a leading suspect in the Jan. 28 shuttle explosion that killed the crew of seven. Air Force Col. Edward O’Conner told a news conference that efforts to bring up the larger pieces--none of which appears to contain the crucial O-ring seal--could take several months because of swift currents.
