COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Cal Lutheran Bombed in Second Half, 80-66

Cal Lutheran University got behind by eight at halftime and never recovered, as Cal Baptist pulled away for an 80-66 victory Friday night.

Cal Baptist made 16 of 19 free throws (84%). Forward Clarence Worship led Cal Baptist with 16 points. He was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Six Cal Baptist players scored in double figures.

Junior forward Lionel Boyce led the Kingsmen with a game-high 17 points, and teammate Steve Delaveaga scored 16. Pat Gibbs scored 14, while Steve Cotner had 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Westmont College 77, The Master’s 57--The Master’s lost three players through the course of the game. Jeff Jordan was ejected with 18:33 left in the first half for elbowing, Dave Knechtel caught an elbow in the eye with 5:12 left in the first half, and Kelly Byrd twisted an ankle with 14:25 left in the second half.

The score was 47-43 before Byrd was injured. After he left, Westmont ran off eight straight points.

Led by 6-5 senior forward Darryll Jones, Westmont shot 74% from the field in the second half. Jones shot 73% from the floor for a game-high 23 points.

Despite the early exit, Byrd led The Master’s with 22 points and eight rebounds.

The Master’s is 1-8 in NAIA District III and 6-19 overall. Westmont is 8-1 in league and 17-6 overall.

Pierce 81, Bakersfield 78--Freshman forward Cedric Purry scored 25 to lead Pierce to the Metropolitan Conference victory at home.

Pierce trailed at halftime, 36-33, but rallied in the second half to send the game into overtime. Freshman guard Tony Thomas had 19 points for Pierce.

Cal Baptist (women) 88, Cal Lutheran 77--Junior guard Sandy Little scored 22, had 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead Cal Baptist.

Cal Lutheran had a 20-12 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. But Cal Baptist came back, outscoring Cal Lutheran, 32-11, before halftime.
