NHL Roundup : Black Hawks End Islanders’ Streak, 3-2
Chicago center Troy Murray scored two goals, including his fourth short-handed tally of the season, as the Black Hawks edged the New York Islanders 3-2 in Chicago Wednesday night.
The Islanders, losing for the first time in eight games, also dropped their first season series (0-2-1) to the Black Hawks since 1973-1974.
Although the Islanders killed off six Chicago power-play chances, they had to play without defenseman Denis Potvin, who suffered a groin injury early in the second period.
Second-period goals by Al Secord and Murray, who also scored the Black Hawks’ first goal, gave Chicago a three-goal cushion before New York’s Brent Sutter scored back-to-back goals, both on power plays.
Quebec 3, Montreal 2--John Anderson scored with 1:15 left in the third period to lift the Nordiques past the Canadiens at Quebec.
The victory, Quebec’s fifth in seven games against Montreal this season, moved the second-place Nordiques to within three points of the front-running Canadiens in the Adams Division.
Anderson’s 17th goal of the season proved to be the game-winner. He scored from the lip of the goal crease, taking a pass from Peter Stastny and firing a low shot past Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy.
St. Louis 4, New York Rangers 3--Greg Paslawski turned Doug Gilmour’s centering pass into his 20th goal with 2:21 remaining, capping a third-period rally that gave the Blues the win at St. Louis.
Left wing Eddy Beers celebrated his first game in a St. Louis uniform with a goal and an assist. Beers, acquired by the Blues from Calgary in a six-player deal Sunday, tied the game at 3-3 with his 12th goal just 13 seconds into the final period.
