An Oriental fruit fly has been caught in a grapefruit grove in San Bernardino, and officials are worried that it may be a sign of an infestation that could threaten the county’s $26-million-a-year citrus business. Fly hunters set out the first of 850 traps. “It’s not really significant until we find a second fly,” said Ed Layaye, chief deputy agricultural commissioner for San Bernardino County. However, if another fly turns up in the next 45 days, he said, an infestation would be officially declared and efforts to combat the pest would begin in earnest. The Oriental fly is one of the easier pests to wipe out, Layaye said, because aerial spraying is not necessary.
