Sea Lion AWOL From Naval Center
A 150-pound sea lion apparently escaped from its compound at the Naval Ocean Systems Center on Point Loma, the Mission Bay Harbor Patrol reported Tuesday.
The sea lion is reported to be friendly and wearing a harness identifying it as a member of the collection at the naval center.
Anyone spotting the animal is urged to call either the Harbor Patrol or the naval center. A Harbor Patrol spokesman said the animal probably has not eaten since it escaped because it is not used to living in the wild. Persons spotting the sea lion are advised not to attempt to pick it up since they could risk being bitten.
The spokesman had no information on what if any military uses the animal has been trained for. The naval center has been known in the past to teach animals various habits that have military benefit.
