Pacific 10 Roundup : Washington Overpowers Arizona State, 72-58
Shag Williams had 22 points and 18 rebounds Thursday night as Washington downed Arizona State, 72-58, to tighten its hold on first place in the Pacific 10 Conference.
Washington (13-7 overall, 7-1 in the Pac-10) built a 35-26 halftime lead, but the Sun Devils (9-9, 3-5) narrowed the gap to four points with three quick baskets to open the second half.
Arizona State crept within 44-42 with 12:22 seconds left, but Washington’s Paul Fortier responded with a basket on a fast break.
Steve Beck scored 28 points for the Sun Devils.
Fortier contributed 17 for the Huskies as Arizona State held 7-foot center Christian Welp, the league’s second-leading scorer at 19.6 points a game, to 6 points.
Washington State 65, Arizona 63 (OT)--Keith Morrison’s jump shot from the key with one second left in overtime led the Cougars past the Wildcats at Pullman, Wash.
The Cougars (10-11, 3-5) held a 56-54 lead before Sean Elliott of lthe Wildcats (9-9, 3-5) tipped in a shot just before the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
