Anaheim Stadium Worker Who Fell Down Shaft Dies
Scott Mills, 18, the worker at Anaheim Stadium who fell 45 feet down a stadium elevator shaft and was trapped for more than an hour, died of his injuries Thursday afternoon.
Police said Mills was driving an electric cart on the top level of the stadium during a motorcycle competition Jan. 18 when the cart apparently ran headlong into the elevator doors, collapsing them and falling four floors, carrying Mills with it.
The sound of the crash apparently was masked by the concrete stadium walls and the roar of the motorcycles, police said. Fire crews were first summoned because workers detected a “toxic odor†coming from the elevator shaft.
It took at least 20 firefighters more than an hour to pull Mills, who lived in Orange, from the shaft.
He died at 3:10 p.m. in the UCI Medical Center intensive care unit, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.
