The World : U.S.-Soviet Talks Resume

The Soviet Union and the United States resumed two major arms conferences. A final session on European security and disarmament opened in Stockholm, with a Sept. 19 deadline for an agreement. In Geneva, a new round of discussions began on the banning of chemical weapons. This two-week round is an intensification of U.S.-Soviet talks on chemical weapons held in 1984 and 1985. It follows a pledge by President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev to accelerate efforts to conclude a chemical weapons accord.
