GUNTHER SCHULLER: “SYMBIOSIS”: Music for Violin, Piano, and Percussion. Anahid Ajemian, violin; Maro Ajemian, piano; Walter Rosenburger, percussion. GM 2007. Schuller’s piece is strong, carefully designed and performed here with conviction. But it is also ugly and unpleasing to the ear, and often seems disconnected. Percussive sounds drop like bright-colored beads with nothing to hold them together, nothing to forge what Aaron Copland called “the long line--that crucial element which gives a piece direction and tows the listener through it.”
