Mike Tyson Runs His Knockout Streak to 17 in a Row
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Hard-punching heavyweight Mike Tyson scored his 17th straight knockout Friday night, stopping a lumbering Mike Jameson in the fifth round of a scheduled eight-round bout.
In scoring his 17th straight knockout, Tyson surpassed Rocky Marciano for knockouts at the start of a career. Marciano had 16 and later went on to win the world heavyweight title. Other boxers have started their careers with more than 20 straight knockouts, but none ever won a world title.
Jameson, 236 pounds, opened the fifth round by attacking Tyson with a series of jabs before Tyson pinned him against the ropes and delivered a smashing right cross and a hard left uppercut.
Referee Joe Cortez quickly stepped between the fighters and examined Jameson, who was bleeding from an earlier cut, and stopped the bout at 46 seconds of the round.
It was Tyson’s longest professional fight. His previous longest bout was a fourth-round knockout over Don Halpin last May.
