As many as eight Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to be tested for drugs under their new contracts, a procedure opposed by the Major League Players Assn., Pirate officials said.

The players, who were not identified, agreed to voluntary random testing during the season as part of their 1986 contracts, General Manager Syd Thrift said.

Several former Pirates were key witnesses in a Justice Department cocaine prosecution. They included John Milner, Dave Parker, Dale Berra, Rod Scurry and Lee Lacy.

The players’ association has filed grievances against all drug-testing clauses until a negotiated drug program can be completed between the union and management.
