Suspect Charged in Series of Burglaries at Homes of Elderly

A Hollywood man has been ordered to stand trial on charges that he posed as a Social Security case worker to enter the homes of several Glendale senior citizens, where he allegedly stole money and valuables.
Robert Adams, 37, was ordered tried on five burglary charges at a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Glendale Municipal Court Judge J. D. Smith. Adams will be arraigned Jan. 29 in Superior Court.
Three elderly witnesses testified that Adams approached them last year and told them he was a Social Security worker who believed they were entitled to more money. Once inside the victims’ apartments, he would ask to see how much money was kept in the home, then steal the cash and other valuables while his hosts fixed him coffee, the witnesses alleged.
Police believe Adams is responsible for at least 50 similar crimes in the Glendale and Northeast Los Angeles area. Glendale Police Officer James Lowery said Adams confessed to at least two of the burglaries shortly after his arrest on Dec. 31.
