Jerry Berndt Named Rice Coach, Athletic Director

Jerry Berndt, who led Pennsylvania to four consecutive Ivy League titles, Wednesday was named football coach and athletic director at Rice.
Berndt, who resigned at Penn Tuesday, signed a five-year contract with the Southwest Conference university. He replaced Watson Brown, who resigned Dec. 5.
Berndt’s salary is believed to be about $150,000 annually.
Berndt, 47, ended five years at Penn with a 29-18-2 record. He followed a 1-9 season in 1981 with four consecutive Ivy League championships. The Quakers were 7-2-1 this season.
