AIR FORCE

Coach: Reggie Minton

Last season’s record: 8-20 overall, 2-14 WAC

Outlook: The Falcons return 10 players from last season, including three starters. Maurice McDonald is leading Air Force in scoring for the second straight season. Jim Gulsvig, a reserve last season, is the Falcons’ top rebounder. Guards Todd Beer and Mike Edwards are returning starters. Beer leads the team in assists and steals.

BRIGHAM YOUNG

Coach: Ladell Andersen

Last season’s record: 15-14, 9-7.

Outlook: The Cougars return starting forward Alan Pollard and center Tom Gneiting. Jeff Chatman, a seldom-used freshman last season, leads the team in scoring. Averian Parrish, who played for last year’s junior college national championship team at Dixie College of Utah, has played well as a swingman. The Cougars have seven players serving on Mormon missions this season.

COLORADO STATE

Coach: Tony McAndrews

Last season’s record: 18-12, 9-7.

Outlook: The Rams return seven players, including two starters. Rich Strong, a 6-9 forward, is considered among the top power forwards in the conference. Guard David Turcotte, the other returning starter, is second in scoring. The Rams also start two sophomores and one freshman in place of three departed seniors.

HAWAII

Coach: Frank Arnold

Last season’s record: 10-18, 5-11.

Outlook: The Rainbows have two returning starters and nine new players on their roster. Guard Andre Morgan has been leading the WAC in scoring. Guard Keith Turner, a junior college transfer, is the No. 2 scorer. Forward Anthony Jones is the other returning starter. Frank Arnold, former BYU coach, is in his first year with the Rainbows.

NEW MEXICO

Coach: Gary Colson

Last season’s record: 19-13, 9-7.

Outlook: The Lobos return four starters, but they have lost injured guard Hunter Green for 1985-86. Forward Johnny Brown, the WAC’s second-leading scorer, is considered the top Lobo player. Guard Kelvin Scarborough leads the team in assists and is second in scoring. Forward Mike Winters is also a returning starter.

SAN DIEGO STATE

Coach: Smokey Gaines

Last season’s record: 23-8, 11-5.

Outlook: The Aztecs return starting guards Anthony Watson and Creon Dorsey, but they have been decimated by injuries. Forward Gerald Murray will not play this season because of a broken kneecap. Center Steffond Johnson has missed the last nine games with a back injury. John Martens, a senior forward, is the only reliable big man on the freshman-oriented team.

TEXAS EL PASO

Coach: Don Haskins

Last season’s record: 22-10, 12-4.

Outlook: The Miners return eight lettermen. Dave Feitl, a 6-11 center, is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. Juden Smith is considered among the top forwards in the nation. Guard Hernell Jackson and swingman Quintan Gates are in their third year with the team. Forward Wayne Campbell, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, has rejoined the starting lineup.

UTAH

Coach: Lynn Archibald

Last season’s record: 15-16, 8-8.

Outlook: The Utes return their top four scorers and eight of the top nine from last season. Guard Manuel Hendrix is leading the team in scoring. Kelvin Upshaw, the team’s other guard, led the Utes in scoring last season. Forward Jerry Stroman and guard Gale Gondrezick are also returning starters. Forward Albert Springs is the team’s most accurate field goal shooter.

WYOMING

Coach: Jim Brandenburg

Last season’s record: 15-14, 7-9.

Outlook: The Cowboys return four men who played considerably last season as freshmen--centers Eric Leckner and David Lodgins and guards Fennis Dembo and Turk Boyd. Guard Les Bolden, who missed half of last season with a stress fracture in his neck, has also contributed heavily this season. Bolden is the team’s only senior.
