Jihad Promises More Terrorist Attacks on U.S., Israel, Turkey
BEIRUT — The underground Islamic Jihad Organization said today that it will escalate its terror war against the United States in 1986 with more kidnapings and suicide bomb attacks.
The group also threatened action against Israel and Turkey, accusing both nations of being tools of U.S. imperialism in the Middle East.
The threat was in a statement mailed to a Western news agency office in Beirut.
The statement said the decision to escalate the anti-American actions was made at a meeting of the high command of the Islamic Jihad Organization on Nov. 25.
“The terrorist Reagan must know that other American embassies and warships will be blown up like the American Embassy and U.S. Marine headquarters in Beirut,†it said.
The Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings of the U.S. Embassy and the Beirut Marine headquarters in 1983 and the truck bombing of the U.S. Embassy annex in East Beirut in 1984.
The group, believed to be made up of Shia Muslims loyal to Iran, has also claimed responsibility for the kidnapings of six Americans and four Frenchmen in West Beirut in the last 21 months.
