Gordon Wood, 71, who compiled a record of 405-88-12 during 43 years of coaching high school football, the last 26 years at Brownwood High in Texas, announced his retirement.
His 405 victories is by far the most for any coach at any level.
Paul Brown is the next closest, with 351 victories in high school, college and professional coaching. Eddie Robinson of Grambling University holds the major college record with 329. George Halas, the late head coach of the Chicago Bears, had 326.
