Peter Wirnsberger of Austria won a World Cup skiing downhill event on an icy course at Val Gardena, Italy, clocking 2:04.29 on the Saslong run in the fourth downhill event of the season. It was Wirnsberger’s fifth World Cup victory since 1979.
Peter Mueller of Switzerland finished second in 2:04.82, while Sepp Wildgruber of West Germany was third in 2:05.28. Bill Johnson of Malibu finished 60th, 4.08 seconds behind the winner.
Mueller moved into the lead in the overall World Cup standings with 64 points. Wirnsberger is second with 61, with Switzerland’s Karl Alpiger, winner of the first two downhills this year, third with 55.
