An off-duty police sergeant shot and critically wounded a man who allegedly tried to hold up a Long Beach fast-food restaurant, authorities said. Sgt. Clay Riley was waiting in line at the Golden Star Restaurant when a man walked in, pulled a gun and attempted a robbery. Riley intervened and shot the suspect several times with his privately owned gun, Detective Bill MacLymon said. The wounded man ran from the restaurant and police found Richard Walsh, 22, several blocks away slumped behind the wheel of his car. Walsh was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
