If your idea of heaven is to dress your offspring like Little Lord Fauntleroy or Alice in Wonderland, stay away from the L.A. Kids boutique. Likewise, if you think kids should only dress in practical, classic clothes that will last for several seasons.
L.A. Kids, in Sunset Plaza, is one of the trendiest, most avant-garde children’s-wear shops in town, offering outfits that range from what can best be described as French couture funk to Space Age fantasy.
Owners Sandy Nagler and Marilyn White opened the 1,200-square-foot shop with a red checkerboard floor more than two years ago, intending to provide less traditional togs for newborns to preteens.
Here’s a partial list of what they sell: red leather jeans, leopard leather neckties, hot pink boas and “fun fur†sweaters, tapestry and paisley smoking jackets and boots, El Vaquero leather flats, leather overalls, handmade fantasy dresses with lots of net and lace, sequined blazers, black velvet suits with leopard lapels and lots of leather bomber jackets for boys a la Indiana Jones or GI Joe.
For the less adventurous, there’s a large selection of sweats, some plain old denim jeans, snowsuits and chic, high-fashion clothes from France and Holland.
If you’re in the market for birthday presents, this place also carries some of the newest, hottest kids’ accessories, toys and books in town. Everything from Madonna bows to wild watches is available, including some of the more popular toys on the market, such as Transformers.
“We try to offer clothes that kids have fun wearing,†says Nagler, who has attracted almost every superstar parent in town.
The list includes Jaclyn Smith, Alana Stewart, Jane Seymour, Aaron Spelling and Apollonia.
The front-window displays alone, designed by Rita Decarlo, are worth a trip to the shop. L.A. Kids is located at 8622 Sunset Blvd. in Sunset Plaza.
