Vince Coleman, who stole a rookie-record 110 bases for the St. Louis Cardinals, was the unanimous winner of the National League Rookie-of-the-Year award announced by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.
Coleman swept all 24 votes from a panel of writers for the maximum 120 points, becoming only the fourth unanimous winner in the history of the award. The others were Frank Robinson in 1956, Orlando Cepeda in 1958, and Willie McCovey in 1959. The American League has had only one unanimous winner--Carlton Fisk in 1972.
Tom Browning of the Cincinnati Reds, a 20-game winner, was second in the balloting.
