Mets Obtain Left-Hander Ojeda in 8-Player Deal With Red Sox

The New York Mets obtained left-handed pitcher Bob Ojeda from Boston in an eight-player trade that sent two young pitchers to the Red Sox.

The Mets sent right-handers Calvin Schiraldi and Wes Gardner to the Red Sox along with outfielders John Christensen and La Schelle Tarver. Going to the Mets along with Ojeda will be three other young pitchers--Tom McCarthy, John Mitchell and Chris Bayer.

Ojeda, 27, was 9-11 with a 4.00 earned-run average last year, his third full season with the Red Sox. Ojeda was 12-12 with a 3.99 ERA in 1984 and is 44-39 in his major league career.

In another deal, the Detroit Tigers traded infielder Barbaro Garbey to the Oakland A’s for switch-hitting outfielder Dave Collins. Collins, 32, an 11-year veteran, has played in both leagues and is joining his sixth major league team.

Last season, Collins batted .251 for Oakland in 112 games. He scored 52 runs, had 29 runs batted in and stole 29 bases. Garbey, 28, came to the United States from Cuba in 1980 and has played for the Tigers the past two seasons. Last season, he batted .257 with 6 home runs and 29 RBIs in 86 games.
