The Portland Breakers’ overdue paychecks and bills won’t be paid by owners of other United States Football League teams, the league’s commissioner says.
Commissioner Harry Usher said Breakers’ owner Joe Canizaro “must work out some kind of agreement” with his former players.
The Breakers, an inactive USFL franchise, owe the players more than $1.2 million for the final four games of the 1985 season. Canizaro, a New Orleans real estate developer, has said the club doesn’t have the money to honor the players’ contracts.
