The state Seismic Commission has endorsed a push for tougher statewide building codes to help safeguard California in the event of a major earthquake. Thomas Tobin, the commission’s executive director, indicated that tougher codes would be aimed at the 50,000 to 60,000 unreinforced masonry buildings in California that would be hazardous in a major earthquake. The 17-member commission has no regulatory power, but its policy recommendations can be the basis of new legislation dealing with building codes.
