Southland Roundup : Okoye Gains 168 Yards as Azusa Pacific Breezes

Azusa Pacific, ranked fifth in the NAIA, rolled to a 39-7 victory over Redlands Saturday night in a nonconference game at Redlands. Azusa Pacific, 5-0 this season, has won 11 straight overall, the longest win streak in the NAIA.

Jon Milhon scored on the first play from scrimmage, and Azusa Pacific breezed from there. Christian Okoye rushed for 168 yards in 22 carries, while Milhon finished with 67 in 5 carries.

Redlands is 1-4.

Occidental 27, U. San Diego 14--Senior fullback Jeff Goldstein caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Pat Guthrie and tailback Vance Guthrie rushed for two scores to lead Occidental to a nonconference win at Occidental. Goldstein carried 15 times for 100 yards for the Tigers (4-1). USD is 2-3.

La Verne 35, Pomona-Pitzer 14--Quarterback Mark Van Allen threw for three touchdowns, and La Verne survived the passing onslaught of Pomona’s Robert Bristow for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Pomona.

Van Allen completed 18 of 36 passes for 254 yards, while Bristow went to the air 67 times, completing 39 for a school-record 431 yards and a touchdown. But Bristow threw five interceptions, three of which La Verne (2-2 overall, 2-1 in SCIAC) converted into scores.

Pomona Pitzer is 0-4, 0-2.

Cal Lutheran 24, St. Mary’s 3--Tracy Downs scored on runs of 42 yards and one yard and tight end Darren Gottschalk caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tom Bonds to lead Cal Lutheran before a Homecoming crowd of 3,440 at Thousand Oaks. In the second half, Bonds suffered a shoulder injury and linebacker Chris Heintz, a three-year starter, suffered a dislocated ankle.

Cal Lutheran is 4-1, St. Mary’s 0-5.

Cal State Northridge 40, Somona State 14--Quarterback Danny Fernandez completed 14 of 29 for 113 yards and 3 touchdowns in leading the Matadors at Northridge. Mike Kane had 24 carries for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kane added another touchdown with a one-yard catch from Fernandez in the third quarter.

Northridge (3-2) opens its Western Football Conference schedule next week against Cal Lutheran. Sonoma State is 1-4.
