Golf Roundup : Tim Simpson Shoots a 67 to Win Southern Open by 2
Tim Simpson shot a steady three-under-par 67 at Columbus, Ga., Sunday to win the $350,000 Southern Open two strokes for his first victory in eight years on the PGA Tour.
The former University of Georgia star fired a 16-under-par 264 to tie the course record set in 1975 by Hubert Green over the par-70, 6,791-yard Green Island Country Club course. The victory earned him $63,000.
Clarence Rose, a 28-year-old former Clemson standout, also shot a final-round 67 to gain second place at 266 and a $37,800 paycheck, while Bob Tway, 26, in his first full year on the tour, shot a 68 for a 267 and third place.
Miller Barber shot a one-under-par 71 for a three-stroke victory in the $230,000 Coca Cola Grandslam championship at Tokyo, Japan.
Barber, 54, finished with a 276 total and earned $50,000. He had three birdies and two bogeys on the final round over the 6,660-yard Oak Hills Country Club course.
In Nagoya, Japan, Graham Marsh of Australia fired a three-under-par 69 and won the Tokai tournament by one stroke when Japan’s Isao Aoki bogeyed the final hole.
Marsh finished with a 10-under-par 278 to 279 for Aoki, and won $42,250 for his 21st victory in Japan.
At St-Nom-La-Breteche, France, Nick Price of South Africa posted a playoff victory in the $178,000 Lancome Trophy tournament.
The 28-year-old Price took the $34,000 winner’s check on the third playoff hole when Britain’s Mark James missed a putt of only eight inches for a bogey 5. The South African sank birdie putts of six feet and nine feet on the last two holes to force the 32-year-old James into the playoff.
Price had a final round 71 to finish at 13-under-par 275.
James, the overnight leader, was two strokes clear of Price with two holes to play but had to be content with a runner-up’s check for $22,500. He shot a 72 over the par-72, 6,138-yard St-Nom-La-Breteche course.
American Betsy King birdied four of the last five holes for a final-round 73 to win the $84,000 British Women’s Open by two strokes at Moor Park, England.
