San Diego Roundup : Southwest Connects on 2-Pointer to Upset Chula Vista

SAN DIEGO — After Southwest High scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the game’s final two minutes to beat fifth-ranked Chula Vista, 8-7, on Friday night, Southwest Coach Carl Parrick said it was probably the biggest win of his life.

Trailing 6-0, Brian Raspicio recovered a Chula Vista fumble on the Spartan 15-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Herbie Nelson’s run from two yards out made the score 7-6, Chula Vista. Raider offensive coordinator Paul Van Nostrand called for a two-point conversion attempt, and quarterback Alex Sanchez hit wide receiver John Walker for the winning points.

“I feel great because it worked,” Parrick said. “It’s not a league championship, but when you beat a team like Chula Vista, it’s a big win.”

Southwest is 2-0-1 and Chula Vista drops to 2-1-0.

University City 20, Serra 19--Sean Darden caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Rich Callender with 2:35 remaining to pull the Conquistadors within one, but Serra (0-2) failed on the two-point conversion. Holmes was knocked out of bounds inches in front of the goal line after catching a pass from Callender.

In this nonleague game at University City, the Centurions (1-1) turned an 8-7 halftime lead into a 20-7 advantage on Kenny Kings’s 65-yard punt return and Rod Cowell’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Joe Moscato on a fake field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter. Todd Holmes’ 17-yard touchdown run with 4:40 remaining closed the score to 20-13 before Darden’s touchdown catch.

Point Loma 20, Kearny 13--The Pointers (2-1) scored all their points in the first half as they upset the No. 4 Komets (2-1) at Mesa College. Halfback John Stanley led Point Loma with 60 yards and 2 touchdowns on 23 carries.

Stanley scored in both the first and second quarters. Kicker Peter Dolan had a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 28-yard field goal in the second.

Running back Lupe Ford scored for Kearny on a one-yard run to make it 20-7, and quarterback Scott Welish tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Rob Skinner. The Komets were intercepted three times and lost three fumbles.

Patrick Henry 28, Clairemont 7--James Courtney threw for 294 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Patriots (1-2) to their first win of the season. Playing at home, Patrick Henry scored one touchdown in each quarter against the winless Chieftains (0-3).

Courtney threw scoring passes of 37 and 7 yards to Kevin Macon and 8 yards to Jeff Theilacker, who had 8 catches for 88 yards. Theilacker has 20 receptions this season. Ron Young of the Patriots had a 22-yard touchdown run. Clairemont’s score came on a 10-yard pass from Greg Gibbons to Craig Spriggs in the second quarter.

Madison 16, Crawford 10--Tailback Jimmy Dean scored on a 16-yard run late in the fourth quarter to lift the Warhawks (2-1) past the No. 10-ranked Colts (1-1) in a nonleague game at Madison. On the play, Dean broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and sprinted around left end to score.

Kevin Williams’ one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter put Crawford ahead, 10-3. Madison scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from Maurice Jackson to Lawrence Lee early in the fourth quarter. Crawford’s Myron Williams gained 50 yards rushing in the first half before leaving the game with a bruised ankle.

Granite Hills 49, Santana 0--In the 3-A Grossmont League opener for both teams, Robert Padillo rushed for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns on 18 carries to lead the eighth-ranked Eagles (3-0) to an easy win at Valley Stadium.

Granite Hills receiver Todd Parker caught touchdown passes of 25 and 27 yards from quarterback Donnie Carroll. Parker also returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, and Carroll scored on a 48-yard run. Santana falls to 0-3.

Woodbridge 8, San Marcos 7--At Irvine, John Yurkuvich’s pass to Dave Townsend on a two-point conversion with 2:05 left lifted Woodbridge over the Knights. Yurkuvich’s nine-yard touchdown pass to Bill York had made the score 7-6. San Marcos scored on a 10-yard run by Jim Terrel in the first quarter.

Helix 28, El Capitan 7--The top-ranked Highlanders (3-0), led by quarterback Jeff Hammerschmidt, took a 14-0 lead after one quarter and cruised past the Vaqueros (0-3) at El Capitan. Hammerschmidt completed 7 of 12 passes for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Hammerschmidt connected with Jeff Exum for Helix’s first touchdown, then Sidney Baxter (7 rushes for 55 yards) scored from three yards out to make it 14-0 in the first period. Hammerschmidt passed to Terry Mack for a 37-yard touchdown to put Helix ahead, 21-0, at halftime.

After Brian Palmer’s three-yard touchdown run brought El Capitan within 21-7 in the third quarter, Helix’s Kerry Barr scored on a one-yard plunge to give the Highlanders their final margin.

Poway 28, Oceanside 21--Quarterback Andy Byrne completed 10 of 16 passes for 153 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Titans (2-1-0) past the Pirates (0-3-0) in a nonleague game at Poway. Three of Byrne’s touchdown passes were hauled in by wide receiver Jeff Maynor, and Mark Kabo caught the other TD strike.
