Jackson Calls U.S. Trade ‘Backbone’ of S. Africa Apartheid

WASHINGTON — Jesse Jackson, calling for an end to investment in South Africa, said Friday that U.S. business trade provides “the backbone of the apartheid system” in that country.
In a speech to students at Georgetown University, Jackson said that dockworkers should stop loading and unloading ships to and from South Africa as a protest against that country’s racial segregation policies.
College students should demand that their institutions not have holdings in companies with South African investments, he added. “We must cut off apartheid at the jugular vein,” he said.
