Violence erupted between police and Teamsters in Watsonville, Calif., when strikers at the Watsonville Canning and Frozen Food Co. hurled rocks and bottles at vehicles leaving the plant, authorities said. Police twice forced strikers back to their union hall a half-block away, first after a produce truck was pelted and then when a second vehicle, this one loaded with employees en route to Salinas, was similarly bombarded. Earlier in the day 17 Watsonville high school students and a teacher were arrested for allegedly violating a court order by protesting in support of the strikers. About 1,000 union members struck the plant 13 days ago to back their contract demands.
