‘Trouble for U.S. in Philippines’
Your editorial is full of gratuitous assumptions.
For instance, while the trial of those accused of complicity in the Benigno Aquino assassination is still being heard, you have already “assumed†that the defendants “have been involved in the Aquino killing.â€
At the same time, you also “assumed†that just because there were demonstrations by some opposition sectors in Manila and a few other places, you hastily concluded that all 54 million Filipinos are against the present administration.
It was likewise an unfair “assumption†for you to assert that “members and supporters (of the Marcos regime) have enriched themselves enormously through corruption and favoritism†without, at the same time, making mention of the fact that no less than President Marcos himself is in the forefront of continuing efforts against graft and corruption, an attendant evil in government structures everywhere.
Your editorial appears to have been precipitated by a desire to improve Philippine-U.S. relations. And the more objective you can be about existing conditions in our country, the more chances we will have for a better understanding of developments in our two countries.
