Pancho Carter edged Johnny Rutherford by inches to win the Molson-Indy 200 at St. Pie, Canada, but Rutherford’s team filed a protest, claiming Carter passed illegally under a caution flag.
The two-car sprint to the finish of the 225-lap race was set up when Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve, running in second place, crashed into the rear of leader Bobby Rahal on lap 206 and sent both cars ramming into the concrete wall in the first turn.
