Placentia : Liberalized Sign Law Tentatively Approved

The City Council voted to liberalize its rules on business signs with the passage of a tentative ordinance last week.
The ordinance means the city will now allow temporary signs--such as banners--as well as pole signs at gas stations and larger monument signs at large retail developments, City Manager Roger Kemp said.
The current code regarding signs is “very vague,” Planning Director Joyce Rosenthal said. The proposed ordinance clears any confusion and “is a little more liberal” as to the number and size of signs, she said.
Monument signs, for example, currently are allowed only for shopping centers, Rosenthal said. The new ordinance would permit such signs for Placentia businesses that occupy an entire building or parcel. The sign law also creates an appeals process for residents dissatisfied with any sign restrictions, Kemp said.
