Shocking Story of the Dalkon Shield Scandal
- Share via
I thought your Dalkon IUD story was a good piece of reporting.
What will linger in my mind is the irony of a company whose moral and ethical orientation makes it eager to destroy damning inter-company correspondence concerning a product that officers knew was causing extensive harm to its user to avoid (1) a drop in sales of the product and (2) any legal consequences resulting from the use of the product. Yet, several years and many lawsuits later, they state they “had hoped to have joined in an effort to devise a procedure that would have concluded this litigation in a fair and expeditious manner.”
I won’t make a big deal about the IUD consumer being exclusively female only to point out that it’s fun to imagine what REAL TROUBLE Robins would be in today had their product caused equal harm to the family dog or cat.
