Farmer’s Mart Moving to New Burbank Site
An outdoor produce market that draws more than 2,000 customers to downtown Burbank each week will move to a new, permanent location on Sept. 13.
The Burbank Certified Farmer’s Market will be in George Izay Park at Clark Street at Griffith Park Drive, said Joanne Sugar, director of community development for St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, which sponsors the market.
Sugar said the location will allow the market to add 10 more vendors to its roster of 25. It will continue to be held Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., she said.
Since 1983, the market has been at the corner of 1st Street and Orange Grove Avenue. It is moving to make way for a 2,500-seat theater.
The market offers fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, and honey, nuts and salami products, Sugar said.
Since January, it has been run by the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation as a fund-raising effort. Vendors turn over a small percentage of their profits--3.25%--to the foundation, Sugar said. The foundation expects to make from $8,000 to $10,000 from the market in 1985, she said.
The market was first introduced to the city by a Burbank Chamber of Commerce public relations director.
