Plans for construction of the city’s tallest building, a nine-story tower east of Studebaker Road between Artesia Boulevard and 183rd Street, have been approved by the City Council.

Council members unanimously passed the proposal by Northern California-based Krausz Companies to build the 110-foot-tall structure on a six-acre parcel next to a newly opened furniture showroom. Construction on the 179,500-square-foot project could begin sometime this fall after city officials approve the final design.

The tallest buildings in Cerritos are the five-story General Telephone office on Carmenita Avenue and several department stores in the Los Cerritos Mall, which are just under 50 feet or five stories high, city spokeswoman Michele Ogle said.

Although the planned office tower is to be the city’s tallest building, it may not hold that distinction for long. Preliminary drawings for the 125-acre Towne Center project across from City Hall on Bloomfield Avenue call for several office buildings and hotels with some of the structures possibly topping nine stories, Ogle said. Ground breaking for the Towne Center is not expected until next year, with completion several years away.
