Dairy Sued Over Jobs
A Knudsen dairy in East Los Angeles was sued Monday by the federal Equal Employment Opportunities Commission for allegedly refusing to hire women for other than clerical jobs.
The lawsuit asks a federal judge to bar further discrimination, establish affirmative action programs and award back pay to women who were unjustly denied such jobs as sour cream filler and yogurt helper at the Knudsen plant at 231 East 23rd Street, attorney Carla Barboza said.
The dairy hires women for clerical jobs, Barboza said, but has allegedly barred women from mechanical jobs since at least 1980. The suit was filed on behalf of at least 50 applicants.
