Startled residents of South-Central Los Angeles awakened to the sound of hoofs striking the pavement when a small herd of ponies, brought in for a fund-raising carnival, broke out of a nearby backyard. The five galloping ponies were spotted by police officers near 81st Street and Avalon Boulevard, Sgt. Paul Shoals said. With the help of neighbors, the officers rounded up the ponies and returned them to 8119 S. Main St., headquarters of the Southern California Prison Coalition. A spokesman for the nonprofit community group said the ponies broke loose while they were being unloaded from a van.
