President Reagan’s tax reforms, if they get through Congress, could devastate amateur golf and hurt sponsorship of professional tournaments, according to a story in Golf Digest.

According to the magazine, the game will be hurt by provisions that stop individuals from deducting interest payments on second homes and corporations from writing off the costs of pro-am spots, tickets and sponsorships. Neither individuals nor corporations will be allowed to deduct club memberships, dues and entertainment.

Jerry Hurley, executive vice president of the National Club Association, contends that golf clubs will lose nearly one-fifth of their revenue.

“Our figures show that clubs will lose 18 percent of their revenue and that 5,000 clubs will have to lay off 81,000 full-time employees if the bill passes,” Hurley said.
