Police acting on orders of Mayor Dianne Feinstein staged diversions while other police smuggled a gun and a grenade through security and onto planes at San Francisco International Airport, officials said. Airport security was tightened immediately after the incidents June 28 and July 5, and seven more attempts by police to breach security were foiled, Deputy Mayor Hadley Roff said. The plan to have plainclothes officers smuggle guns and a disarmed hand grenade aboard airliners was devised by Feinstein to test airport security, Roff said. In one case, officers staged a phony fist fight to divert the attention of guards. Results of the tests were given to Airport Director Louis Turpen, who immediately tightened security.
