Protest leaders on Guadeloupe ordered a halt to the most serious unrest on the French Caribbean island in two decades after an appeals court freed an independence activist from a Paris jail. Georges Faisans was sent to France to serve a three-year sentence for a machete attack that slightly wounded a teacher. Dozens of people were injured and Pointe-a-Pitre, a city of 100,000, was virtually shut down by the week of demonstrations.
