Demonstrations against Gov. George Deukmejian’s veto of two bills to provide $56 million for child care programs took place in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno and San Diego. In San Francisco, 20 toddlers carrying signs reading “Have a Heart†took part in the protest. The children were from the North of Market Child Development Center. Marsha Sherman, the center’s director, said the facility is at capacity with 44 children from 6 months to 5 years old and at least 50 families are waiting to get their children into it, but there is no money for expansion. The parents of these children are “people who want to be in the work force and off welfare,†Sherman said.
