Biko Case
I find it hard to believe that after eight years a trial was held in Pretoria, South Africa, over the death of a black activist Steve Biko. It was stated by the court that the two government doctors who treated Biko were found guilty of disgraceful and improper conduct. The South African Medical and Dental Councils committee found that the two physicians, both white, had failed to provide adequate care for Biko, who died on the floor of a prison cell Sept. 12, 1977, from brain and internal injuries, suffered during police interrogation on security charges.
What I find hard to believe is the sentence that was handed down to the two doctors.
Benjamin Tucker was suspended from medical practice for three months. Ivor Lang was formally reprimanded by the disciplinary committee.
And we Americans wonder why the blacks in South Africa want to be free from white rule.
