San Diego
The San Diego-based aircraft carrier Ranger is scheduled to get a new skipper Wednesday when Capt. Walter J. Davis Jr. relieves Capt. Arthur H. Frederickson, who has commanded the ship for 24 months.
Frederickson’s new assignment has not yet been announced. However, Navy sources said it is likely that he will retire.
While under Frederickson’s direction, the 27-year-old Ranger set a record of 121 continuous days at sea. It recently completed a 13-month overhaul.
A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Davis was graduated from Ohio State University in 1959 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical and aeronautical engineering. He also holds a master’s degree in aeronautical electronics.
He has been executive officer of another San Diego-based carrier, the Kitty Hawk, and has commanded the combat support ship Sacramento. He served as executive assistant to the deputy chief of naval operations for air warfare from December, 1983, to August, 1984.
