McEnroe vs. McNamara at Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON, England — Defending champion John McEnroe will face Australia’s Peter McNamara in the opening round next week of the men’s singles in the All-England tennis championships.
The pairings for Wimbledon were drawn Tuesday.
In the women’s event, defending champion Martina Navratilova faces fellow American Lisa Bonder, while Chris Evert Lloyd--seeded No. 1 with Navratilova--meets Mary Lou Piatek in the top half of the draw.
McNamara, a two-time Wimbledon doubles champion, damaged knee ligaments while competing in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, two years ago when he was ranked seventh in the world. After undergoing surgery, he did not play again until last December.
In his comeback at the Australian Open, he lost in the first round and has since played in only three singles events.
Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, bidding for his second Grand Slam title and his first Wimbledon crown, plays Mel Purcell of the United States.
Jimmy Connors, seeded third, faces Sweden’s Stefan Simonsson, while another Swede, No. 4 Mats Wilander, winner of this year’s French Open, faces Yugoslavia’s Slobodan Zivojinovic.
