Ground Breaking Today for L. A. Senior Housing

Councilman Gilbert Lindsay will preside at today’s 2 p.m. ground-breaking ceremonies for Stovall Terrace, a 97-unit, $5.5-million federally subsidized housing project designed specifically for senior citizens or handicapped tenants.

Completion is projected for July, 1986, according to a spokesman for Stovall Development Corp., the developers.

The site at 4075 S. Figueroa St. is within the Exposition Sub-area, a recent expansion of the Hoover Redevelopment Project of the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency. The project, funded by a Department of Housing & Urban Development Section 202 loan with Section 8 rent subsidies, will be the first constructed in the sub-area with direct involvement by the redevelopment agency.

Architect Jean Whinnery of Flewelling & Moody Architects of Los Angeles designed the four-story building to fit in with the surrounding low-rise residential area. The contractor is Campbell Construction Co., South El Monte.

Robert B. Cummings & Associates of Huntington Beach provided loan consulting services for the project, the third project by Stovall Development, an outgrowth of a foundation founded in 1935 by the late Dr. Leonard Stovall. When Stovall Terrace is completed, more than 500 residents will be housed in projects owned and managed by the foundation, a minority agency based in East Los Angeles.
