Astronomers at the University of California, Berkeley, said they have developed strong evidence that there is a huge “black hole†in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. One of the key discoveries of a team headed by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Charles H. Townes was that gases on the inner edge of the ring at the galaxy’s nucleus swirl at a faster rate than gases farther away--indicating that the gases are moving around a single large object, and that this object’s gravity is so tremendous that neither light nor any other form of radiation can escape.
