Coal Mine Tunnels Continue to Smolder

HARRISBURG, Pa. — An uncontrollable inferno is still burning after 23 years in a maze of old coal mine tunnels beneath Centralia, Pa. After all attempts to extinguish the smoldering fire had failed, the federal government in 1983 approved a $42-million plan to buy out residents who wanted to leave.
