Both Andy Hawkins and Carmelo Martinez considered themselves both good and lucky Thursday as they helped the San Diego Padres beat the Montreal Expos, 5-4, in San Diego.

Hawkins got some help from his friends in bringing his record to a fancy 10-0, the best mark in the major leagues, while Martinez knocked in four runs with two homers and hit a hard ground ball that led to another run.

“As easy as I am 10-0 right now, I could be 10-10 after my next 10 starts,†said Hawkins, who scattered 10 hits in 7 innings. “But I only want to look ahead five days at a time. We’ve had a great defense all season while I’ve been in there.

“All the runs off me are earned, and I think that says something. Whenever I get behind or have a little trouble, it seems somebody picks me up.â€

While Martinez’s two homers accounted for the first four San Diego runs, it was his final time at-bat, in which he didn’t get a hit, that was a big part of the Padre victory.

Martinez had a three-run homer and a solo shot to furnish the offensive thrust. Then in the Padre eighth, Martinez hit a grounder that U.L. Washington booted at third base, allowing Steve Garvey to score the fifth Padre run.

The run became important when reliever Luis DeLeon allowed a homer to Herm Winningham in the Montreal ninth.

“It wasn’t an RBI but it was a big run in the game,†Martinez said. “That’s what is important.â€

Martinez said he wasn’t trying for a home run in his final at-bat.

“I don’t want to think about home runs when I’m up there,†he said. “You can tell by my swing I’m always trying to hit on top of the ball. If you can get a short, hard swing, you’re going to make contact. I wanted to get a line drive because I knew that was a big run.â€

Hawkins walked one and struck out four in 7 innings. DeLeon and Craig Lefferts finished up.

Montreal took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a leadoff triple by Washington, who had three hits, and a sacrifice fly by Andre Dawson.

The Padres came back in their half of the inning when Kevin McReynolds and Terry Kennedy opened with singles against loser Dan Schatzeder (2-1). Martinez followed with a drive just inside the left-field foul pole. It was his fifth home run of the year.

On his next at-bat in the sixth, Martinez homered over the left-field fence against reliever Randy St. Claire. It was the second time this season that Martinez has had two home runs in a game.

The Expos nicked Hawkins for two runs in the eighth when Tim Raines singled and Washington doubled. Dawson’s sacrifice fly delivered one run and Hubie Brooks’ RBI single finished Hawkins before DeLeon got the final out.

San Diego scored in the eighth when Garvey and Kennedy singled and Washington booted Martinez’s grounder.

Winningham homered for the Expos in the ninth before Lefferts came on to get the final out for his first save of the season.

St. Louis 6, Atlanta 0--Jack Clark hit his ninth home run, and Joaquin Andujar claimed his ninth victory in a combined five-hit shutout with Bill Campbell as the Cardinals beat the Braves at Atlanta.

Andujar (9-1) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three before leaving after five innings, when his right shoulder tightened.
