A military appellate court on Thursday upheld the life imprisonment sentence of Wang Hsi-ling, Taiwan’s former chief of intelligence, for his role in the California murder of American-Chinese journalist Henry Liu.

Wang, 58, former director of the Defense Ministry Military Intelligence Bureau, will be eligible for parole after 10 years. He was convicted by a military court last month in the Oct. 15, 1984, shooting death of Liu, a Daly City man, who frequently wrote articles critical of the Taiwan government.

Two gangsters--Chen Chi-li, 42, and Wu Tun, 35--also have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder.
